Statement of Solidarity for Drag Story Hour

September 26, 2023

Dear Friends,

Brooklyn Community Pride Center wish to express our unwavering support for Drag Story Hour in the wake of the recent bomb threat they faced this past Saturday at the Cortelyou branch of Brooklyn Public Library. This incident is not only an attack on a cherished community partner whom we have had the privilege of working with on several occasions, but also makes clear that the nationwide rise in anti-LGBTQ+ violence has become a very real local issue that impacts LGBTQ+ people and their allies right here in our beloved borough.

Drag Story Hour has long been a beacon of love, diversity, and acceptance in our community. It provides a safe and inclusive space where children, their families, and even adults can learn the values of tolerance, respect, and the celebration of differences. It is disheartening to witness such acts of hatred targeting an event that spreads messages of love and understanding, especially to our youth. We will not be cowed by these cowardly and hateful acts of intimidation and misinformation.

In the face of adversity, we stand strong, united, and committed to fostering a community where every individual can live their truth without fear. This incident serves as a stark reminder that our work in promoting acceptance, inclusivity, and equality is far from over. We will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with Drag Story Hour and all LGBTQ+ individuals and organizations in Brooklyn, unwavering in our dedication to combating hatred and discrimination.

In Solidarity,

Jako Douglas-Borren
Director of Programs
Brooklyn Community Pride Center
